Many people use sports analogies to describe corporate leadership and performance. Yes, there are some similarities but some argue that the biggest difference is that the sports world is somewhat predictable. The rules, rewards, teams, roles, and playing conditions are mostly stable. In contrast, the corporate world can be – VUCA – Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous.
But that shouldn’t stop anyone from making sports analogies. I don’t follow sports, I am still learning from my friends who do – But I want to use more examples from sports to illustrate effortlessness in my videos because:
- There is so much research on Flow state in the sports world.
- Many athletes exemplify drive and authenticity by ‘being in the zone’ and striving for peak
performance.
So next time, don’t automatically dismiss sports analogies for business. Listen with context and curiosity and maybe you’ll learn something new.
