Influencing without the ICK

Picture this:

You’re gathered around the conference table, pitching your latest idea to the team.
The room buzzes with anticipation, and you are trembling with excitement.
And as you speak, you notice heads slowly nodding in agreement, minds opening to your vision.
You suddenly feel a power – your idea is shining, you are all set to make an impact.

✨ That’s the magic of influence at work.

Influence is not an EVIL word.
Influence at work is not about manipulation or coercion.
Influence is using the power of persuasion to gain enthusiastic support and unparalleled collaboration.

Influence is a superpower at work.

But many people either feel clammy OR come across as sleazy when they try to influence at work.

Here are two basic human instincts to tap into to influence without the ICK:

💰 GREED 
“Here’s what is in it for you…”

Everybody loves a sweet deal. When you’re pitching an idea or a proposa, make sure to highlight the perks. Maybe finishing a project early means bonuses for the team or some extra recognition. Lay out the benefits clearly and watch them bite.

😱 FEAR
“What this will help you avoid…” 

People hate screwing up. Use that fear to your advantage by pointing out the risks your idea can mitigate. Maybe your new software can fend off costly data breaches. Suddenly, your proposal is the knight in shining armor.

But what if neither a reward nor a threat is influencing people’s behavior?
What if they are just idle, stuck, stagnant, or highly resistant to change?

🌱 BABY STEPS
“See, this is so easy!”

Change is scary. Break your idea down into bite-sized chunks that even the most change-averse can swallow. If you’re introducing a new workflow, start with one small change and build from there.

🤝 SUPPORT, SUPPORT, & SUPPORT MORE
“I’ll take care of the toughest part.”

Show them you’re in it together. If proposing a new team initiative, volunteer to organize the first few meetings and manage the initial setup. When they see that you’re willing to shoulder the hard work, they’ll be more inclined to follow your lead.

Anyone can influence by understanding and leveraging these fundamental human characteristics—greed, fear, idleness, and the need for support.
