Organizations- Cascade Meaning, not Goals!

As 2021 comes to a close, many organizations are getting ready to share their 2022 goals. But – how impactful are these big org-wide goals? If one of the goals of an organization is to hire more female employees, do all departments focus on the goal equally? NO.
Ex: The tech department might need more female employees than say, HR. In such situations, Marcus Buckingham suggests cascading down the INTENT and MEANING behind those org-wide goals, rather than the goals themselves.
So in our example, the org-wide goal could be ‘gender diversity’ (not just females) and when the intent is cascaded down, different departments can then authentically set different goals based on their current gender makeup. So organizations can drive higher performance if they delegate MEANING rather than goals and trust their leaders to run with it.
