The Problem with Authenticity at Work

There is a new focus in organizations on asking their employees to bring their authentic selves to work. But as writer Jodi Ann Burey brilliantly explained in her TEDx talk, this new focus on authenticity disproportionately and negatively impacts certain employee groups.
Those who are in the minority, say introverted employees in a predominantly extroverted work culture, may find showing up authentically, counterintuitive. This may be because of past uncomfortable/undesirable experiences.
Often, showing up authentically may prove risky for the career growth of many. So before organizations can start asking employees to bring their whole selves to work, some basic ground work needs to be done by both leaders, and employees themselves.
