The Problem with the 10000 Hour Rule

10,000 hours. That’s how long it’s supposed to take to master a skill. It’s a pretty popular “self-help” idea. Mmm… I’m not a big fan.

Yea it shows that experts are made and not born but – Here are two flaws:

Let’s do some quick math. Say I want to learn playing the keyboard, And I put in 2-3 hours each day after work. 2.5 hours each day is roughly 1000 hours each year. So TEN YEARS to become an expert?! I don’t have that kind of patience for delayed gratification!

This rule relies on hard work and struggle. That’s the opposite of fun. And 10,000 hours seem pretty overwhelming in this world full of distractions. I may lose focus and just give up.

There’s hope though. In my next article, I’ll share how to cut the 10,000 hours rule by more than half! Stay tuned!
